Microsoft recently announced that although Windows 10 will be launching on July 29th, it will only be for a select number of users. Terry Myerson, VP of Operating Systems at Microsoft, explained in his blog post that due to the fact that they will be upgrading over 1 billion devices, they are going to roll out the new update in phases.

The first group of people who will get to update to Windows 10 on July 29th will be the Windows Insiders. After July 29th, Microsoft will begin sending notices to reserves systems gradually. They are doing it this way so that they are able to manage the roll out, pay attention to responses they get from users and continue updating Windows 10 to ensure the best experience possible.

That means that Windows Insiders are the only ones getting Windows 10 on July 29th and everyone else is going to have to wait. How long will they have to wait? Myerson, unfortunately, doesn’t say. He only states that Windows will send out copies to those who reserved one as soon their “compatibility work confirms [they] will have a great experience.” In other words, they are still tweaking this version and they are trying to avoid any embarrassment of distributing a problematic update.

Although many of us are anxious for the new update, it’s understandable that Microsoft wants to release Window 10 in phases. This will ensure that they can “manage demand” and fix any issues before it reaches anyone else. Having to upgrade over 1 billion devices is not easy and must be done very carefully. The last thing they want to do is have an issue that is sent out to all devices through an upgrade and have their brand name tarnished.

Windows 10 has been quite impressive in beta and is sure to impress most if not all users who reserved a copy one they finally receive it.
